Oh how I love making books with preschoolers! Printable readers like this one, class books, hand-drawn books, and books that incorporate kids’ art . . . they are all amazing learning tools. Plus, they’re just plain fun.
So why not combine the early learning aspects with the children’s holiday excitement?
Because, as we all know, children are often excited about upcoming holidays, and Halloween is no different.
I See Halloween Emergent Reader
This is a simple, printable book about some of the things children might see around Halloween.
The text is repetitive, and it uses three sight words – I, see, the.
There are two versions of the Halloween book. This way, you can choose the version that best suits the needs of your students.

One version has all of the text printed out. This one will likely be best suited for most preschoolers, with some kindergarten children benefiting from it too.
The other version leaves a blank space to write “the” on most of the pages. This one will likely suit many kindergartners, although some preschoolers might be ready for it too.
Materials Needed
Since this is such a basic printable reader, there aren’t too many materials to worry about.
Here’s what we used:
Like I said, not too many prep items to get. You likely have all of these materials in your classroom already.
In my opinion, the small supply list is another reason to like the I See Halloween emergent reader.
Prepping the Printable Halloween Book
First, decide on the pages you’d like to use with your students. Print those out and make enough copies for all of the kids.
To assemble the Halloween book, fold the pages in half with the images facing out.
Then arrange the pages in order and staple on the left-hand side of the book.
You can watch how to put the Halloween reader together here:
Once the books are assembled, it’s time to jump into the literacy fun.
How to Use the I See Halloween Emergent Reader
Explain to the children that they’ll be making a book all about Halloween.
You can ask the kids about their favorite parts of Halloween at this point, or you can save that until the end.
Walk through the book with the children, talking about each of the pages. Point out the sight words and the images.
You can even ask the children which of the words on the page match up with the illustrations.

For example, on the page that reads, “I see the spider” ask the children to say the word “spider” with you. Help the kids say the word emphasizing the initial sound. Then ask, “What letter makes the /s/ sound? You’re right, it’s the letter s!”
If you’re using the version of the I See Halloween book that allows the children to write “the” now’s the time to do so. You can have a written prompt the kids can reference as they write. Or you can write “the” in yellow marker, allowing the children to trace over the word in pencil.

Then it’s time for the kids to color in the illustrations. You can use crayons, markers, or colored pencils for the pictures.
Once the books are completed, be sure to keep them around to read and reread together.
Halloween Books for Kids
I thought I’d share some Halloween books you can read aloud to the children too.
Talking about these books is a great time to discuss authors and illustrators, too. Comparing the Halloween books with the I See Halloween emergent reader can help explain the concept to your students.
