As winter draws near, I can’t help but think about all the fun and exciting winter-related activities to prepare for.

I have so much fun trying new slime recipes with children and this icy blue shaving cream slime was no exception.

It reminds me of snow and ice, and all things winter. The way children’s eyes light up when they see or learn about snow is magical, just like the winter season itself.

This blue fluffy slime is the perfect sensory activity for your classroom’s winter wonderland theme.

How to Make Fluffy Slime

The enchanting color created with this particular combination of ingredients and dye is giving me major Frozen vibes. It would be a great addition to the many Frozen activities kids will love to try out this winter.

Not only is it perfect for winter, but it can also be used in themes throughout the year. Imagine how much the kids would love to incorporate this activity in an ocean theme during the summer months.

Safety with Slime

Before we jump into how to make fluffy slime, let’s talk about slime safety.

Making a slime recipe is really just a super fun science experiment. So, we must treat it as such, and use proper safety precautions at all times. Here are some safety guidelines to use when making slime.

Hands should be washed both before and after playing with the slime.
Nothing from this activity, be it the individual ingredients or the end product, should be put in anyone’s mouths.
Keep an eye out for skin sensitivities or reactions. While I have never seen this happen, it’s always something I watch out for.
As with any Fun-A-Day activity, adult supervision is required at all times.

Lastly, have fun! That’s an important safety measure, right?

Foamy Blue Slime Ingredients

To give this slime it’s puffy texture, we used shaving cream. This is something we have used in the classroom for many other sensory activities (and to clean the many sticky messes left from preschoolers).

Here’s the complete list of materials. You may already have many of the items you need in your classroom.

2/3 cup white Elmer’s Glue
1.5 tablespoons of contact lens solution (must contain boric acid and sodium borate)
1/4 cup water
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
3 cups shaving cream
10 drops neon blue food coloring
Baby oil (optional)
Toys (optional)

Ingredients for blue fluffy slime which include Elmer's school glue, shaving cream, baking soda, contact solution, blue food dye, and a measuring cup of water.

In addition to those materials, you’ll also need a measuring cup, mixing bowl, and mixing spoon. I like to keep a few of each of these items on hand for the many sensory projects we get ourselves into.

You’ll also want to use a plastic mat or another surface, that you don’t mind getting dirty, to work on.

How to Make Blue Fluffy Slime with Shaving Cream

Once you’ve gathered all of the necessary ingredients, it’s time to start making the silky smooth slime.

First, start by pouring the glue into the mixing bowl. This recipe calls for 2/3 cup of glue. If you buy your glue in bulk, you can use a measuring cup to do this. But if you have a standard 5-ounce bottle of glue you can just pour the entire bottle right into the bowl.

Next, pour in about 1/4 cup of warm water. The warmth helps the glue absorb and mix well with the water. Once that’s mixed well, incorporate the baking soda.

Then you’ll want to spoon in all three cups of shaving cream, stirring as you go. The shaving cream is pretty key when we’re talking about how to make fluffy slime.

Add in the neon blue food coloring and mix until the slime is completely blue. We used ten drops, but if you aren’t getting the icy blue color you’re looking for, add a few more.

After that, add in the contact solution. As you stir this in, you’ll begin to see the slime separating from the bowl.

Now, this is where the magic happens! Take the slime from the bowl and place it on your work surface. Knead the slime for several minutes until it reaches the fluffy consistency that you desire.

At this point, you may need to add a small amount of baby oil to your hands to reduce sticking.

Once your slime is the texture you’re looking for, it’s time to let the kids play!

Playing and Learning with Slime

First, I suggest letting the kids explore and investigate the amazingly fluffy slime on its own. They can poke it, prod it, stretch it, ball it up, and watch it melt away into a puddle.

Speaking of melting, this slime activity would be a great opportunity to talk about snow and melting snow along with a preschool weather theme.

You can even add some snowflake cookie cutters to the mix for the kids to investigate and play with.

Some of the children may enjoy using small toys with this buttery soft slime. Consider placing some winter or Frozen-related toys out to see if they incorporate them into their play.

Fluffy slime may seem like all fun and games, but rest assured that there is so much learning taking place when little ones engage in sensory play.

Not to mention all the math and science concepts you’ll be going over if you teach the kids how to make fluffy slime. Children are free to explore concepts like measurement, chemical reactions, descriptive vocabulary, and volume.

Once the kids are done for the day, be sure to store the slime in an airtight container so the fun and learning can continue for days to come.
