Many children have probably heard the poem Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star at some point in their lives. Some may have heard their parents sing it to them, while others have heard the poem recited on a children’s television show or radio station.

I think it’s great to incorporate something familiar into our lessons with preschoolers. Familiarity helps students feel comfortable with the subject matter. And I always see some additional confidence when learning, which is sometimes lacking with novel concepts.

Of course, if your students have never heard the poem before, that’s okay! The printable still offers so many potential lessons that will cover a variety of preschool concepts.

These free printable nursery rhyme pages are perfect for preschool and kindergarten children.

The kids can learn the first part of the well-loved rhyme, and the retelling pieces can be used to extend their learning.

How to Prep the Printable

Since this is a pretty simple printable, you don’t have to do very much!

First, be sure to save the printable to your computer. Then open it up in the most up-to-date version of Adobe Reader. You might run into printing issues if you open the file using a non-updated version or a different program.

Next, print the pages out. One page contains the most well-known verses of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. The other two pages have retelling cards that match the poem.

Once the pages are printed out, cut the retelling cards apart. You can leave the poem page as-is.

I highly recommend laminating the retelling cards. This will ensure they have the endurance to make it through many sets of little hands! As for the poem page, that can also be laminated. Or you can place it in a dry erase pocket.

Then you’re ready to go!

Using the Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Printable with Your Students

You can really use these printables in a variety of ways. So don’t let my suggestions hold you back if you have different ideas!

Use the poem page to introduce the nursery rhyme to your students. As I mentioned above, some children may have already heard it, while others haven’t yet.

Sing Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star aloud to your students. After you’ve gone through it once, encourage the children to echo your words. You sing one line and then point to the kids so they know to repeat the line back to you.

If most of your children already know the rhyme, encourage them to sing along with you!

The retelling cards are for, well, retelling Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star! And it will certainly be a great tool to teach and practice sequencing.

Model how to use the retelling cards with the whole group the first time. Grab a pocket chart and show the children how to place the cards, in order, to retell the rhyme.

You might even have children hold the cards. They can work with you to put the various parts of the poem in order.

During small groups, see if you can bring out some props to go with the retelling cards. Star toys and small pillows would be a good start.

Sing the song together, and then let the children work together to place the cards in the correct order. Use the props alongside the cards. You can help as needed, of course.

Once the children are comfortable using the retelling cards, you can place them in your literacy center. Your students can bring the cards out for independent practice or practice with their peers.

Extension Ideas

As I mentioned earlier, you can use the Twinkle Twinkle Little Star printable in several different ways!

Here are some other possible ideas you can try with your children:

  • Place the retelling cards in your dramatic play center to encourage the kids to reenact the poem.
  • Pair the cards with play dough. The children can create each of the scenes using the dough.
  • Hang the cards up in your art center to inspire some nursery rhyme art.
  • Use the poem as part of your classroom or individual poetry journals.
  • Help children calm down with a designated area in the classroom, where you’ll place the poem and cards, along with a star sensory bottle.
  • Challenge students to underline words that rhyme with a dry-erase marker.
  • Match the retelling cards with picture cards from the Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star rhyming activity.

Those are just a few additional ideas. You and your students will likely come up with even more ideas of their own!

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Poem

The original version of this well-loved nursery rhyme was written by Jane Taylor.

Oh, and if you’re wondering if Mozart wrote the music we all associate with the rhyme, the answer is no. You can read more about that in the highlighted, linked text in the previous sentence. I found it very interesting, myself!

The Twinkle Twinkle Little Star printable includes the most well-known part of the nursery rhyme:

Twinkle, twinkle, little star,

There are multiple verses to the rhyme, and I remember learning all of them to sing with my son when he was young. You can definitely incorporate the entire song into your teaching once the children have a full grasp of the first part!
