Dice games of any and all kinds are always a hit with my students. I love that they’re simple to set up, fun for the kiddos, and pack in a lot of learning math through play!

With that in mind, I put together two free printable valentine games for kids to play with dice.

Preschool Valentine Games

I used some fun Valentine’s Day clip art as the basis for these dice games – adding the numbers, sections, and text on the computer.

Dice Game Materials

Before you get started, you might want to grab a few items. The main items you’ll need are:

  • Dice
  • Printable Valentine games – available at the bottom of this post

If the games will be consumable, the kids will need something to color with:

For reusable games, you’ll want some of the following:

What Do Kids Learn with These Valentine Dice Games?

The dice games look so simple, but they really engage the kids in a variety of ways.

Here are some of the concepts that can be taught using the preschool valentine games:

  • Number identification
  • One-to-one correspondence
  • Pattern recognition
  • Turn-taking and cooperation
  • Addition and subtraction
  • Colors

I tend to use the dice games a few different ways, depending on the children’s needs and interests.

I love that they can be tailored to suit different needs in the classroom or at home. Below are the two main ways I use the dice game with my preschool classroom.

Roll and Cover Preschool Valentine Games

For this version, print out the color version of the dice game and laminate it. If you’d rather not laminate the sheets, you can place them in dry erase pockets instead.

After the pages are protected, introduce the game to the children.

Two children (or an adult and a child, or teams of kids) play together. One child picks a color of candy hearts, with the other child picking a different color.

They take turns rolling a die and covering up the appropriate number with one of their candy hearts. Whoever has the most numbers covered at the end of the game is the winner.

If you don’t want to use candy hearts, you can use glass gems instead. Or any other small manipulative, really.

Roll and Color Valentine Dice Games

Sometimes the kiddos really really want to take home their dice games. The black-and-white version is perfect for this version of the game!

Print out the black-and-white version, and then show the kids how to play.

Again, two children play together (or an adult and a child, or teams of kiddos). One child chooses a crayon, colored pencil, or dot paint marker (the kids love those!), with the other child choosing a different color crayon (or dot paint marker).

They take turns rolling a die, coloring in the appropriate sections depending on what the die says.

Whoever has the most numbers covered at the end of the game is the winner (and can take the paper home).

PLEASE NOTE that many school district computers have firewalls and pop-up blockers that will inhibit your access to this free printable. You might see the pop-up stall out and say “submitting” for an extended period of time, or you might not see the box that’s supposed to pop up. If you’re on a school computer and run into these issues, this might be the case for your district. Using a non-school computer should solve that problem.
