Create this easy easter art with your students this spring. It’s super simple, but yields such beautiful results! Be sure to add it to your list of Easter activities for toddlers and preschoolers.
If you’re a regular reader of Fun-A-Day, you know I love creating fun art projects for the kids. And I especially like including them in my lesson plans whenever a big event or holiday is coming up. It’s a great way to commemorate a special occasion.
I also think Easter is a really easy holiday to plan for in a preschool classroom. It’s the perfect time to get the children excited to learn about certain topics like hatching chicks, bunnies, color theory, and more! And even if you aren’t interested in those themes, there are so many ways to incorporate Easter components into your regularly scheduled lessons.
Easter Bunny Cookie Cutter Art
I love the way the paints meld together in this beautiful Easter art. This may come as a surprise – but the beautiful pattern is incredibly simple to create. So much so that your preschoolers will think that it’s a piece of cake! Now, let’s talk about how you can walk your students through creating their own beautiful work of art.
Materials for the Easy Easter Art
In my experience, it’s best to have all of the necessary materials laid out before beginning any project. Imagine having to dig through the supply closet while a classroom full of preschoolers is left to their own devices. Things could go seriously awry! So, if only for your own sanity, try to have everything ready to go before getting started.
Fortunately, this project requires very few materials. And there’s a good chance that you already have everything you need sitting right in that trusty supply closet. Here’s what we used:
And that’s it! See? Not much at all!
As always, you can edit the materials list to include things you already have on-hand for the sake of convenience. You can also substitute out a different surface for your artwork. Try something like stretched canvas or cardstock. The additional price might be worth it to protect and maintain the integrity of the artwork. Or, better yet, let the kids make their easy Easter art on a canvas tote bag. That would be perfect for Easter egg hunts!
Creating the Easter Cookie Cutter Art
Once your materials are all lined up, you can start setting the project up for the kids. Place everything the kids need out, and explain that they can create as they see fit (within your usual art parameters, of course). Depending on the needs of your students, you might need to model how to use the cookie cutters to create the easy Easter art.
To begin, pour the paint in the center of a paper plate so that the colors touch each other. We used three colors: purple, green, and blue, which complimented each other well, especially for an Easter theme. We also decided to swirl the paint together, which I think created a really cool effect.
You and your students can decide on those details together. Keep in mind that some students might not want the paint colors touching, and that’s okay!
Now that the paint is ready, dip an Easter cookie cutter into the paint. Make sure to thoroughly cover the entire outline of the cookie cutter with paint.
Next, place the cookie cutter onto the paper (or other surface) gently. Then grab a paintbrush and dip it in the paint where the colors meet. That’s what gave our painting the cool tie-dyed effect.
Now, hold the cookie cutter in place as you paint the inside of the shape. Holding the cookie cutter in place could prove to be a little challenging for some kids, and that’s okay. Just hold it for them. Or, they can try to paint inside the lines without the cookie cutter.
Make sure that the other cookie cutters are easily accessible. Then, the kids can stamp and paint until they’re pleased with the final product.
Process Over Product
Keep in mind, some children are going to want to do this entire process. They’ll get a kick out of holding the cookie cutters while painting inside them.
Other kids might focus on dipping and stamping the cookie cutters. Still others might have fun sliding the painted cookie cutters along the paper creating a cool paint effect. Some of the children might even forgo the cookie cutters and just want to use the paintbrushes.
All of this is perfectly fine! While more detailed or specific art projects are fun in preschool, having a big focus on process art is a good idea. This allows the children to become more comfortable in their creativity. They can also explore different techniques and materials more freely when we aren’t as concerned about what the finished piece of art looks like.

Easter Theme in Preschool
Holiday themed lesson plans are almost always a hit with preschool-aged kids! They swoon over the special experiences they get to have on those days. And their excitement starts days, weeks, and sometimes even months ahead of the holiday.
So, if your students loved the easy Easter art project, or just Easter in general, try to capitalize on their excitement by creating a variety of Easter lessons and activities. Leaning into their interest of the holiday will create even more excitement for the lessons, which can lead to some really meaningful learning opportunities!
Here are some Easter-y ideas to help you plan:
- There are so many Easter literacy activities to chose from. All you have to do is decide which ones will serve your classroom population best.
- Identify and create shapes with our free printable bunny shape mats.
- Each child can create a unique piece of art for preschool, like the easy Easter cookie cutter art or a classroom Easter egg art project.
- Make some peeps slime! It’s a great little science experiment where the kids can observe and describe changes in matter.
- There are plenty of Easter sensory activities to go around. Choose one (or several) that will excite your students and let them go to town!
- The children will love moving and grooving to some fun Easter songs and rhymes!
