If you and your students are fans of making printable books together, this pirate printable book needs to be added to your collection! It’s very low-prep so you can have it ready to use with the kids tomorrow.
I think the pirate emergent reader would be perfect for Talk Like a Pirate Day, or as part of your next preschool pirate theme. Or just when you find yourself with a classroom full of kids fascinated by the concept of pirates.
You can explore a variety of early literacy skills with the printable pirate book, and the children will be more invested because they get to be the illustrators! Who knows, maybe this simple emergent reader will inspire your students to make up their very own pirate stories.
Have you ever participated in Talk Like a Pirate Day? My very first teaching assignment was teaching kindergarten in a public elementary school. One of my colleagues loved using the day to get his older elementary-aged students excited about learning. I can tell you, kindergarten and preschool kids sure seem to love the day, too!
Pirate Printable Book
I must admit, I LOVE making books with the kids. Class books, individual books, dictated books, art-based books, and simple printable readers like this one. The children seem to get more invested when they’re making books, whether they’re acting as authors, illustrators, or both.
How to Prep the Pirate Emergent Reader
You don’t need much to get this little pirate printable book ready to go. First, gather your materials. Here’s what I tend to use with printable books like this one (I may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post):
Yes, that’s really all you need to get the books ready! Of course, if you want to grab a few additional things, you can:
- Crayons
- Markers
- Laminator
- Pirate “jewels”
- Googly eye finger puppets
Once you have the materials you’d like, it’s time to get the book ready. First, get your copy of the pirate printable book at the bottom of this post. Then download it to your computer and open it in the most up-to-date version of Adobe Reader. Next, print however many copies you need.
To assemble the book, stack the pages horizontally. Fold the pages in half, with the images and text facing out. Next, separate the pages and put them in order (with the folded sides on the right). Finally, staple the book on the left. It honestly takes longer to type out the directions than it does to put the book together.

You can always just cut the pages in half and staple them if that’s easier for you. I just prefer to print, fold, and staple.
Using the Pirate Printable Book with Kids
Now it’s time to introduce the books to your students! Explain that they’ll be making a book about a pirate’s things. If you want, you can brainstorm some of the items usually associated with pirates.
Call the children over to you in small groups or individually, depending on your students’ needs. Walk through the book, making note of the high frequency words here, is, the.
Chat with the kids about the items on the pages. You can walk the kids through finding the words as well, if desired. This can be done by focusing on the words in the sentence or on the letter sounds. For example, on the page that reads, “Here is the pirate’s map” you can say a couple of things:
- “Here is the pirate’s map. Which word do you think is map? Let’s count the words in the sentence.” (Hold up fingers while doing so.) “I hear the word map at the very end of the sentence. It’s the last word. Where is the last word on this page? Here it is! Map.”
- “Let’s find the word map. Say the word map with me. Let’s break it apart into its sounds – /m/ /a/ /p/. I hear /m/ at the beginning of the word map. What letter represents the /m/ sound? M! Here’s the word that starts with m.”
Then let your students color in the illustrations. Depending on their ages and needs, this can be done in one sitting or multiple. You know your students best!
Then take some time to read through the book together. For the kids who are ready, encourage them to point to the words as you read the book together.
And be sure to keep the books to reread again and again! I like to keep books like this in the kids’ book boxes near the reading center.
