Young children love making their own little books to read over and over again. And mini books like this one allow children to practice a variety of literacy skills alongside counting backwards from ten.

I just love making books with the kids! What about you? They usually have such a blast with the process, and they’re so proud to be authors and/or illustrators. Plus, emergent readers pack a lot of learning into a small package.
Materials to Make Printable Books
You don’t need much to put together the 10 red apples book. Here’s what we used (I may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post):
That’s really all you need to get the books ready! If you want, you can gather additional materials for using the book with your students. Here are some ideas:
- Crayons
- Markers
- Red pom poms
- Red buttons
- Math manipulatives
- Mini erasers
Check out the items you already have on-hand and decide from there if you need anything else.
How to Assemble the 10 Red Apples Book
I prefer emergent readers that are just print, fold, and staple. So that’s how I made the ten red apples printable book. It’s super simple to assemble.
First, save the file to your computer and open it in the most up-to-date version of Adobe Reader. Next, print the pages you’d like to use. Make any additional copies as needed.
Fold the pages in half down the middle, keeping the images and text facing out. Then separate the pages and stack them in the correct order (the folded sides will be on the right). After that, staple along the left-hand side of the book.
I think it takes longer to type the directions than it does to assemble the apples mini book. Here’s a short video to show you how to do it:

Ways to Use the Ten Red Apples Printable Book
There are a few different ways you can use the 10 red apples book. The first is, of course, as a book. Explain to the children that they’ll be making a book about red apples in a tree. The book begins with 10 red apples and ends with 0 apples. If you want, you and the kids can make up a story about why an apple disappears each page. Maybe a child eats one, or perhaps a squirrel takes one each night.
Walk through the book, pointing out numbers and high frequency words. Read the pages to or with your students, and allow time for the kids to color in each page of the book. Depending on the ages of the kids, this might take a couple of days. Be sure to reread the book and let the kids keep them to read together for a while.
You can also cut the books apart into individual pages and use them as apple counting mats. Laminate the pages and pair them with loose parts or math manipulatives. They’d be perfect for your math center. Children can count the apples and then cover the apples with manipulatives.
Children can even work on numerical order (and reverse numerical order) with the pages. Have the kids put the pages in order from 0 to 10, and then challenge them to go from 10 to 0. Then use manipulatives to practice one-to-one correspondence.
