If your students love printable books, this summer printable book is sure to be a hit! You can teach and practice so many early literacy skills with it.
The summer emergent reader is very easy to prep, so you can have it ready for the kids tomorrow. Plus, it’s actually two books. This way, you can differentiate based on your students’ individual needs.

Summer Printable Book
I love hearing about kids’ favorites, what about you? Their favorite books, songs, foods, etc. It’s just fun to hear what the children are interested in.
Plus, those kinds of discussions help connecting with individual students. And they’re great for language development! Hopefully this summer mini reader will lead into some fun discussions with your students.
How to Prep the Summer Emergent Reader
First, grab any materials you’ll need for preparing the mini books. Here’s what I tend to use (I may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post):
Yes, that’s all you really need to get the summer printable book ready to go! You might want a few additional items for actually using the book:
- Crayons
- Yellow marker
- Pencils
Once you have everything you need, it’s time to get the book ready. Here’s what to do:
- Fold the pages in half, with the text and images facing out.
- Arrange the pages in the appropriate order.
- Staple alongside the left-hand side.

You can see how it’s done in this video:
Of course, if you prefer to cut all the pages apart and staple them that way, you can! I just happen to prefer the print, fold, staple method.
How to Use the Summer Printable Book with Kids
Now that you have the summer books printed and prepped, go ahead and call the children over! Explain that they’ll be making a book about some fun things to do in the summer.

Walk through the pages with your students. Point out high frequency words and discuss the images you see on each page. Talk about some of the letters and letter sounds, as appropriate.
If you’re using the version that has space to write the word “like” let the children do so. Some can write it on their own, while others will need some help. You know your students best, so choose the book and provide the support they need.

For both versions, have the children color in the illustrations on each page. We tend to use crayons, but you can use colored pencils or markers as well. That’s really up to your own preference.
What’s Included in the Free Printable?
As I mentioned earlier, the summer printable book actually comes with two versions of the printable. One has all of the text typed out for the children. The other version leaves a space for the kids to write “like” on each page.

Each page references something fun to do during the summer. Here’s the run-down of the book, each page following the “I like to . . .” sentence format:
- Build sandcastles
- Go camping
- Eat ice cream
- Go on picnics
- Play in the water
- Collect shells
The title page and final page both read, “I like summer.” I wonder which summer activities your students show the most interest in! Maybe the summer printable book will inspire your little authors to write their own books about the season.
