Pirate Cutting Practice
I enjoy making simple printables like this for young children. The images add a touch of whimsy and engage the kids. And I like being able to use them in a multitude of ways. That’s one of the big differences between printables and preschool worksheets – there isn’t just one “right” way to use them.

How to Prep the Pirate Tracing Sheets
Start off by gathering the materials you’ll need to prep the strips. You don’t need much! Here’s what I generally use (I may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post):
- Printer
- Scissors (a paper cutter works well, too)
- Laminator
- Dry erase pockets
Since you’re already grabbing items, why not pick up some things to use with the pirate cutting practice sheets. Here are some ideas:
- Dry erase markers
- Plastic gold coins
- Scissors
- Unifix cubes (or other math manipulatives)
- Craft gems
Then it’s time to prep! As I mentioned earlier, the pirate cutting strips are very low-prep. You just need to:
- Request the printable via the form at the bottom of this post.
- Download it to your computer and print.
- Cut the pages apart into individual strips.
- Laminate or place in dry erase pockets (if you want them to be reusable).
Now you’re ready to call your students over!
How to Use the Pirate Cutting Practice Sheets
Tell the kids they get to be pirates on their way to buried treasure. You can even call these tracing sheets “treasure maps” of sort. I know the children will get a kick out of that!
Once your little pirates are ready to go, there are so many possibilities for using these pirate tracing sheets. Here are some ideas:
- Let kids cut along the dotted lines. This provides tons of cutting practice!
- Have children use dry erase markers to trace over the lines.
- Give the little scallywags some gold coins to place over the lines.

- Pair the pirate cutting practice printable with a simple sand tray. Then challenge the kids to make patterns in the tray, using the strips as visual cues.
- Place glitter glue on the lines and let them dry. Your kids can then trace over the lines with their fingers.
As the kids are using the cutting strips, be sure to guide them in moving from left to right.

What are Kids Learning with the Pirate Tracing Printable?
In addition to just being fun for the kids, the pirate cutting practice pages help kids work on:
- Cutting skills, of course
- Fine motor skills
- Hand and finger strengthening
- Left-to-right directionality
Those fine motor muscles and skills are so important when it comes to future reading and writing. And they aid in young children being able to manipulate things like zippers and buttons, which are important for basic life skills.
