The Mitten Sequencing Activity

I love creating resources that go hand-in-hand with a particular book, allowing children to really engage with the story. And Jan Brett’s The Mitten is definitely on my list of must-read books for preschool.

The Mitten sequencing activity is a great way to round out story time while letting the children immerse themselves in the book.

How to Prep the Mitten Sequencing Printable

Start off by gathering your supplies! Here’s what you’ll need for this sequencing activity (I may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post):

This list is super short, which is a win for us teachers. But there are a few things you can add if you want to change up the activity:

How to Use The Mitten Sequencing Activity Sheet

Now it’s time for the best part. Let the kids try them out! Start by reading the story, The Mitten by Jan Brett, with your students. Make sure to let them ask questions and look at pictures throughout so that they stay engaged in the story.

Now it’s time for students to retell the story using the sequencing printable. You know your students best, so just use your best judgment to decide if you will do the activity with the whole class or in small groups.

To begin, pass out a glue stick, a numbered template and either a set of the precut animal cards or the sheet of animal cards to each student. If you choose to let students do the cutting, instruct them to carefully cut out the animal cards. Provide adaptive scissors for students who are still getting the hang of cutting.

Next, have students put the animal cards in the same order that they entered the mitten in the story. If they need help remembering the succession of animals that find shelter in the mitten’s warmth, they can thumb through the story again. You might even need to retell the story a few times. Once they’re in order, students can glue them on the corresponding number on the template.

Now that students have completed The Mitten sequencing activity, they can retell the story. You can let students retell the story independently, in small groups, or by having them take turns, building on what previous students have said.

Other Ways to Use The Mitten Animal Sequencing Cards

If you’re a regular reader of Fun-A-Day, then you may already know that I’m not the biggest fan of worksheets in preschool. But hands-on printables, like this, are another story. They are versatile and offer a variety of hands-on learning experiences.

Here are a few other ways to learn and play with this free printable:

  • Cut and laminate the animal cards and place a magnet on the back of each. Then place them on the whiteboard as you read the story to the class. Try passing a card out to each student and have them come up and place them on the board when their animal is mentioned.
  • Laminate one set of cards and one template. Place adhesive hook-and-loop fastener dots on the back of the cards and on each numbered square on the template. Students can use this over and over in your literacy center!
  • Create a The Mitten sensory bin. Start by laminating the animal cards. Then learn how to make fake snow with flour and create a sensory bin. Pair the snow sensory bin with the animal cards, an actual mitten, and matching animal toys. Have students dig through the snow, searching for the animals and placing them into the mitten based on the order in the book.
  • Pair the sequencing activity with a snow writing tray. Using the cards as a model, students will write the animal names in the tray with their fingers.

These activities cover so many preschool concepts: sequencing, left to right directionality, literacy, fine motor skills, just to name a few. So, The Mitten sequencing activity is low prep, versatile, and full of opportunities for learning? That’s a win in my book!

The Mitten Sequence of Animals

I highly recommend having a copy (or two!) of the book to reference during The Mitten sequencing activity.

If you don’t have it on-hand right now, here’s the sequence the animals enter the mitten in the story:

  • Mole
  • Rabbit
  • Hedgehog
  • Owl
  • Badger
  • Fox
  • Bear
  • Mouse

There are picture cards with each animal and its name written out in the printable. I know the kids will enjoy inspecting each animal card and putting them in order. Expand even more on the story and sequencing activity with some of the fun projects listed above.
