Why Incorporate Handprint Art into Your Lesson Plans?

While I’m a big believer in planning tons of process art activities, there’s definitely room for handprint art, as well! In fact, the valentine handprint art ideas come with their own set of benefits. Here are just a few:

  • Creativity
  • Thinking outside the box
  • Problem solving
  • Sensory exploration
  • Language development
  • Fun keepsakes for the kids and their loved ones

On top of those reasons, hand print art and crafts can also touch on many early learning skills. For example, the Valentine’s Day hand print art shared below include these concepts:

  • Color identification
  • Following simple directions
  • Color theory
  • Practicing left and right
  • Patterns
  • Counting
  • Life cycles (of plants and insects, particularly)
  • Early writing

All of that while having a blast painting with their hands and fingers! So if you’ve been concerned about trying handprint art with the kids, I hope these facts allayed some of your concerns.

Tips for Creating Art with Hand Prints

I do have a few tips to share with you before we jump into all the hand print ideas! Take a quick read through and choose the ones most applicable to you and your students.

10 valentine handprint art ideas for kids to make

First and foremost, I don’t recommend forcing kids to make these art projects. Not every child enjoys making art with their hands and fingers. You’ll likely run into a few who will balk at the idea, especially if it involves getting their hands messy. Adapt based on the needs of your students. For some, that might look like tracing handprints on paper rather than using paint. For others, a different type of art project might be requested.

In addition to that, here are a couple more tips when creating valentine handprint art with the kids:

  • Keep wipes and paper towels nearby.
  • Set up close to a sink if at all possible.
  • Work over tile or place a mat/tarp underneath your workspace.
  • Explain and model beforehand.
  • Let kids take on as much of the art as possible, helping only as needed.
  • Let children add their own unique additions to the art.
