Humpty Dumpty Calendar Numbers

I love bringing nursery rhymes into the classroom. There are tons of ways to incorporate and build activities around them. And, since the kids are likely already familiar with Humpty Dumpty, they might be excited to expand on the popular nursery rhyme with some fun activities!

That’s where the Humpty Dumpty number cards come in. Not only are they perfect for the classroom calendar, but they also work so well for a variety of other preschool activities too.

Below, I’ll share the best way to prepare the numbers to use with the kids. Then I’ll go over a few ways to use them. You can always make adjustments to fit the needs of your individual students.

How to Prep the Number Cards

It doesn’t take lots of time or effort to prepare the Humpty Dumpty calendar numbers. Start by gathering all of the necessary materials. Here’s what you’ll need (I may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post):

And that’s it! You don’t need much to get the Humpty Dumpty number cards ready. With that being said, your supply list might grow a bit based on the activities you choose. Here are a few other ideas based on the activity ideas below:

Now that you’ve gathered all of the materials, it’s time to prepare the number cards. It only takes a few simple steps. Here’s what to do:

  • First, request your copy of the Humpty Dumpty number cards at the bottom of this post.
  • Then save the file to your computer.
  • Open the file in the most up-to-date version of Adobe Reader.
  • Print as many sets of cards as you’ll need.
  • Then cut the cards apart.
  • Finally, laminate all the numbers.

Now the Humpty Dumpty numbers are ready to use with students.

How to Use the Humpty Dumpty Calendar Numbers with Kids

Now that we have the Humpty Dumpty number cards cut, laminated, and ready to go, it’s time to put them to work in the classroom. There are several ways to use the cards. But the most obvious use is just as the title suggests – as calendar numbers!

If you’re a teacher who likes to incorporate calendar concepts into your morning routine and circle time, these number cards make a great learning tool. Themed number cards are a great way to add visual interest, promote conversation, and build activities around.

Have a student come up and place the correct number on the calendar each day. Designate the card as the “number of the day” to add to the learning. Lead students in counting up to that number, turning it into a kinesthetic learning experience by hopping or clapping as you count.

Take it a step further and have students practice writing the number on personal white boards or dry-erase pouches. They can even draw the designated amount of tally marks, shapes, dots, or small eggs on their white boards.

Now, I know some classrooms don’t have a designated time in which they focus on the date each day. And that’s perfectly fine! Just prep the cards and place them on your calendar at the start of the month. That way, students can inspect and refer to the chart as they see fit.

The calendar actually serves a number of purposes in the classroom. Of course, it helps us keep up with the date and any special events forthcoming. But it can also serve as a reference for students. They can look to the calendar when counting, adding, subtracting, writing numbers, and more!

More Ways to Use the Humpty Dumpty Numbers

As I mentioned, there are several ways to use the Humpty Dumpty calendar numbers in the classroom. I’m a fan of hands-on activities that keep the kids engaged. Here are a few such activities in which to use the number cards:

  • Line a shallow tray with a sensory material, like sand. Set the tray out, along with the stack of Humpty Dumpty number cards. Students can use the number cards as models to practice writing the numbers in the sand with their fingers.
  • Pair the number cards with a set of small manipulatives, like buttons. Have students select a card. Then they will practice counting with one-to-one correspondence as they place the correct number of buttons next to each number printable.

  • Have the kids put the cards in numerical order from 0 to 35. For an added challenge, have them put the numbers in reverse order, from greatest to least.
  • Print two copies of the number cards. Then use the two sets of cards as a memory game, taking turns searching for matches. Alternatively, pair one set of the Humpty Dumpty cards with another set of calendar numbers for the game.

Who knew such a simple printable with an easy set-up could turn into so many meaningful learning activities!? And these are just a few activity ideas. I’m sure you’ve got a few epic activity ideas yourself!

What are the Kids Learning with the Calendar Numbers?

As a teacher, the question, “how will this activity benefit my students?” is always in the back of our minds. Personally, I’m not opposed to doing activities just for the fun of it. But if I’ve learned one thing over the years, it’s that the kids are always, always learning!

The activities planned around these calendar numbers are certainly no exception to that rule. Here are a few early learning concepts you can expect students to explore with the Humpty Dumpty number cards:

  • counting
  • calendar skills
  • one-to-one correspondence
  • number identification
  • number formation
  • patterns
  • numerical order

Remember, kids are always learning. Throughout the course of their play, the kids could even be exploring concepts that we, as educators, haven’t even considered yet. This list is just a few concepts they can practice with the cards. It is certainly not all-encompassing.
