How to Use the Printable Numbers with Kids

Oh, there are seriously SO MANY ways to use the numbered cards with your students! I’m going to share some of our usual activities below.

  • Use the printable numbers to explore numerical order. For kids just learning this concept, start with numbers 1 to 5. Then expand up to 10 and keep increasing based on where your students are.
  • Pair the number cards with your favorite math manipulatives or loose parts. Help the kids explore one-to-one correspondence by placing the appropriate number of manipulatives next to each card. Again, start with just a few numbers when children are just learning the concept.

  • For kids learning about number formation, set out some printed numbers alongside a simple sensory writing tray. Kids can practice writing numbers in sand or other sensory materials.
  • Once they’ve practiced writing numbers in sensory trays, break out the white boards or the chalkboards for more writing practice.

  • Incorporate the number printable cards into transition times in the classroom. For example, give each child a card and encourage them to line up in numerical order. You can even challenge the kids to try lining up in reverse numerical order.
  • Play a simple memory matching game with multiple sets of numbers. Or play a game where the children turn over a card and then have to find the number that comes next.

So there are 6 simple but meaningful ways to use the printable numbers with your students. And they can be used along the entire process – from modeling the skill to guided practice to independent exploration!

Even More Ways to Use the Printable Numbered Cards

Of course, there are tons more ways to use this math printable with the kids! I couldn’t stop myself with sharing just a few more ideas with you:

  • Add the numbers to a large pocket chart. Make sure they’re in order from 0 all the way to 100. If possible, group things in a consistent manner. For example, 0 to 9 on the top row, followed by 10 to 19. Keep the pocket chart up for reference and bring the kids’ attention to the patterns they can see.
  • Put the numbers you’re currently working on in a sensory bin. Have the kids hunt for the numbers, and then give them a few additional tasks. They can check off the numbers they find on a list or they can write the numbers on a piece of paper.
  • Use the printable numbers to measure your students. Or measure various items in your classroom. Or both! Then help the kids compare measurements, discussing what’s taller and shorter.
  • For children learning about addition and subtraction, place the number cards next to grouped objects of the same number. This can help them move towards writing addition and subtraction sentences.
  • If you’re creating pocket chart graphs with your students, don’t forget the printable numbers! This can help the children more clearly see how many items are in each column of your homemade graphs.
  • Add glitter glue on top of the laminated numbered cards and let it dry. Your students can trace over the glitter glue as they learn how to form each number. You can even place a piece of paper on top and make a crayon print of the numbers this way!
