Read below for prepping and usage tips, as well as a few ideas for trying something a little different.

Please keep in mind that you can make adjustments based on your own preferences, your students’ interests, the materials you have available, etc.

How to Prep the Mother’s Day Printable Poem

Start off by gathering all of your materials! Here’s a list of suggestions (I may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post):

  • Mother’s Day handprint poem (request it near the bottom of this post)
  • Printer
  • Paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Marker or pen
  • Laminator (optional)
  • Construction paper (optional)

Once you have the supplies you need, it’s time to get everything prepped and ready to go! As I mentioned earlier, there’s not much to it:

  • Print the handprint poem, making as many copies as desired.
  • Pour a few paint color options into cups or dishes.
  • Have cleaning supplies, like wipes and paper towels, nearby.

And that’s about it! Now you’re ready to call the children over to create their poem pages!

Mother’s Day Handprint Poem Directions

With special projects like this, I prefer to call the children over individually. That way I can give them each some one-on-one attention. It’s also a nice time to connect and chat with the students, in my opinion.

Depending on the ages and needs of your students, you might do this in a small group setting. It’s also dependent on how many kids are in your class, if you have additional adult help, and how much time you have for this little project.

First, call over a child. Show them the Mother’s Day handprint poem page, reading the poem if you haven’t done so already.

Then ask the student to choose a paint color for their handprint. You can suggest they pick a color their mom likes, or even the child’s favorite color. That’s totally up to you and your students.

Help the kiddo paint their hand, ensuring the entire palm and all bottoms of fingers are painted. Guide their hand onto the appropriate spot on the page and help them press their handprint onto the printable. Next, assist in lifting the child’s hand off the page without smearing the paint.

Then it’s time to let the Mother’s Day handprint poem page dry. Once the handprint is fully dry, it’s time to add the finishing touches. Ask the child to come back and add their name to the paper, along with the date. They can also write “Love, (their name)” if desired. Again, that’s up to you and the kids!

More Ideas for the Handprint Poem Gift

There are more ways to use the printable poem with your students, of course! If you want to go beyond a basic handprint, you try a variety of alternatives:

You can also add something to the Mother’s Day handprint poem. For example, a small picture of the child would be a lovely addition! It can be glued into the middle of the dry handprint, to the side of the hand, or even on the back of the paper.

There are also options for packaging the poem. You can then send the poem home as-is, or you can spruce it up a little. For example:

  • Use pinking shears to make a decision around the edge.
  • Glue the poem to a color coordinated piece of construction paper.
  • Laminate the poem.
  • Or all of the above!

Whatever you and the children decide to do, I’m sure the Mother’s Day handprint poem will be well-received! How do you plan to use it with your students? Don’t forget to request the printable near the bottom of this post.

What Does the Mother’s Day Poem Say?

The poem on the printable is very sweet and simple. It reads as follows:

Let this handprint remind you,
When I have grown so tall,
That once I was quite little
And my hands were very small.

Like I said, it’s a simple poem. But I think it’s perfect in conjunction with children’s handprints on a sweet keepsake gift. What do you think?

Is the Printable Poem Only for Moms?

You’ll notice the Mother’s Day printable poem doesn’t actually say Mother’s Day on it. I did that specifically so you can use the poem as you see fit!

Our classrooms are often diverse in many ways, including family structures. Some children don’t have a mom to make this for. But they have other loved ones or special people in their lives they’d love to gift it to!

So, no, it’s not just for moms. You can use it for other family members, other people in your students’ lives, and even for other gift-giving holidays. You know your students and their situations best, so make the best judgement call you can!
