Add these canoe calendar numbers to your camping activities for preschoolers and kindergarten kids. They’d also be great as part of a transportation theme or a unit about the outdoors.
No matter when you integrate the canoe number cards, you can use them for a wide variety of early math skills. They can be used to teach math concepts like number identification and one-to-one correspondence, just to name two.
Plus, the canoe printable numbers are low-prep. You can use materials you likely already have on-hand to prep the cards and use them with your students.

Canoe Calendar Numbers
Below are some prepping tips and a few ideas for using the canoe numbers with your students. I always like to remind you that you don’t have to do things the same way I do! Since these number cards are so versatile, it’s very likely you and your students will come up with brand new ways to use them.
How to Prep the Canoe Number Cards
While you’re getting those supplies, why not find the items you’d like to use in conjunction with the canoe calendar numbers. Here are some suggestions:
- Buttons
- Math manipulatives
- Pom poms
- Dry erase markers
- White boards
- Simple sensory materials

Now that you have all the materials ready, it’s time to prep! First, print as many copies as you’d like. Be sure to adjust your printer settings if you need them to be something other than 3 inches, squared. Cut the cards apart, and then laminate everything.
How to Use the Canoe Calendar Numbers
And now it’s time to bring the numbered canoes into your classroom! They work very well as part of traditional and linear calendars. You can place them up to spice up the room during a camping theme, even if you don’t use the calendar as a teaching tool with your children.

If you do incorporate some calendar time into your day, the canoe numbers are an engaging way to practice some math at that time. Have the kids point and count how many days there have been in the month. This is always more fun with an interesting pointer, but even a stick will do!
Ask the children to predict the next number before turning the card around to check. You can use the canoes with other number cards to create patterns on your calendar for even more math exploration. My campfire calendar numbers, for example!
Other Ways to Use the Canoe Number Printable
Of course, there are so many ways you can use the canoe calendar numbers outside of the calendar, too! Perhaps you don’t have a classroom calendar, or maybe you don’t like using it as a teaching tool. That doesn’t have to stop you!
Here are some more ideas to try with the kids. Of course, you can make adjustments to these ideas based on your own preferences, as well as the ages and needs of your students.
- Ask the children to put the cards in numerical order from 0 to 35. If they need a challenge, see if they can do so in reverse numerical order!

- Use the canoe numbers as references when practicing number formation. Your students can use their fingers to write the numbers in sensory writing trays. They can also use chalk and chalkboards, or dry erase markers and white boards.
- Play a memory-like game to practice number identification. Start with a small grid of numbers and add more if the kids need more complexity. You can do this with two sets of the canoe calendar numbers, or pair them with another set of number cards.
- Have the students use manipulatives or loose parts to practice one-to-one correspondence, placing the appropriate number of items next to each card. Again, start with just a few and add more as needed.

- Make patterns using the canoe numbers and another set of numbered cards. Our basic set of printable numbers would work well here.
