Below, I’ll share prepping tips and ideas for using the printable poem with kids. Please keep in mind that you don’t have to do everything the exact same way as I do, though!

And be sure to request a copy of the poem near the bottom of this post, above the last image.

Father’s Day Handprint Poem

The printable poem has 2 slightly different versions. The poem itself is the same, but one page has it near the top and the other has it near the bottom. Choose the one that makes the most sense for your kids.

How to Prep the Handprint Poem for Dads

First, locate all of the materials you’ll need for this project. Here’s what we used (I may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post):

  • Printer
  • Paint
  • Paintbrushes
  • Markers or pens
  • Laminator (optional)
  • Construction paper (optional)

Once you have all of your supplies, it’s time to prep. Start off by requesting a copy of the printable via the form near the bottom of this post. Then print the page, making as many copies as needed. Place the painting supplies nearby, and now you’re ready for the kids!

How to Use the Father’s Day Handprint Poem

For a keepsake gift like this, I prefer to call the children over one at a time. You can try it out with small groups if that makes more sense, though.

Let the children choose the color they’d like their handprints to be. Have the kids use a paintbrush to paint their entire hand, assisting as needed. Then guide the students to where to place the handprint on the poem page. You might need to help them fully press down and remove their hands without smearing.

Once that’s done, let the prints dry on the Father’s Day handprint poem. Once everything is dry, work with the children to add the finishing touches to their poem gift! Some things you might want to include:

  • Dear Dad (or Grandpa, etc.)
  • Love, Child’s Name
  • The year
  • Happy Father’s Day!
  • I love you!

What you add to the page is totally up to you and your students. Or you can let the children choose individual short phrases they’d like to add. Whatever makes the most sense in your classroom.

More Possibilities for the Handprint Keepsake

I kept things pretty simple here, as I wanted to give you something that can be done easily (but still have a lot of meaning). With that being said, you can always make some adjustments to the above ideas. If you want something other than a basic handprint, you can try:

  • Handprint heart tree
  • Tracing and coloring the hands, rather than paint
  • Handprint flowers
  • Fingerprint hearts
  • Handprint animals

Basically, you can make the kids handprints into almost anything you can think of! And you can even add some embellishments to the poem. For example, placing a small image of the child inside the handprint would be sweet! Or a picture of the child and their father, if you have one.

You can send the Father’s Day handprint poem home as-is, or you can take things up a notch or two. Here are some possibilities:

  • Laminate the poem so it’s more likely to last
  • Use pinking shears to make the edges a little pancier
  • Back the poem on construction paper
  • Or try all of the above!

I’m sure this homemade gift will be well-received no matter how you and the kids put it together! Don’t forget to request a copy of the poem near the bottom of this post.

What Does the Father’s Day Poem Say?

It’s a very simple poem, reading:

Here’s a special handprint,
A memory that is true,
A treasure that I made,
Just to give to you.

As I said, it’s short and sweet! But I think it pairs perfectly with a little kid’s handprint. What do you think?

Is the Printable Poem Only for Dads?

You can definitely use the Father’s Day handprint poem printable for people other than dads! I specifically left off the year and the holiday for that reason.

We often have diverse classrooms, and that includes diverse home environments. Some children have a dad living at home, some children are in foster care, some children live with their grandparents, some children have dads who have passed away, etc.

So I hope this simple poem allows you to make adjustments based on your students’ individual circumstances. They can create a page for their dad, grandpa, uncle, family friend, or father figure. Alternatively, you can use the printable for Mother’s Day, Grandparents’ Day, or something completely different!
