Music and movement is one of my favorite parts of the daily preschool schedule. Of course, I apparently I have a lot of favorite parts of the day (according to the kids).

Young children need to move. They’re not meant to sit still for hours on end. Honestly, I can’t blame them. I have trouble sitting still too long (unless I’m immersed in a really good book).

So why not channel that bodily need to move by providing a music and movement part of your day? I’ve incorporated it in a variety of places depending on the year and the kids. Sometimes it’s part of our circle time, sometimes it’s at closing time, and sometimes it is just an impromptu dance party.

How about you – how do you incorporate music into your preschool day?

St. Patrick’s Day Songs for Preschoolers

No matter what part of your day you have allocated for music, these songs are just what you need when planning for St. Patrick’s Day.

Below are a variety of St. Patrick’s Day songs for preschoolers (and kindergartners!) who love to sing and dance. I’ve gathered many of them from YouTube. That way, you can easily listen to them right here.

Maybe you’ll even put together your own playlist chock full of preschool St. Patrick’s Day songs. If you happen upon any that I don’t have referenced here, be sure to let me know.

But now, music . . .

Rainbow

What a sweet song from Nancy Kopman! This song and video explores all of the colors of the rainbow, and it even delves into why we see rainbows.

I found this to be a pretty catchy song, and St. Patrick’s Day is a great time to learn (and sing!) about rainbows.

Counting with a Leprechaun

In this video by Harry Kindergarten Music, children can work on their early math skills. Along with the narrator, kids count by ones, twos, fives, and tens.

On top of the math, there are rhyming words and a beat to keep with this song. Challenge the kids to see how many rhyming words they hear.

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

Jack Hartmann is a favorite children’s musician of mine. He has a St. Patrick’s Day counting, too, so I thought I’d share this one as an alternative to try with the kids.

It’s full of repetitive words, rhymes, and lots of counting.

Five Little Leprechauns

This fun and silly song from Peter Apel Music combines rhyming and counting backwards from five. It’s “illustrated” with flannel board scenes, which will definitely amuse the kids.

You could set up your own flannel board invitation for counting down along with the song!

The Color Green Song

This video includes a low-key song from 123ABC TV is all about (you guessed it!) the color green. It runs through a variety of items that are green. Some of them are items you’d naturally think of, like watermelon and turtle. Some are a little sillier, like the green unicycle.

This would be a sweet and simple conversation starter if you want to talk with the kids about the color green.

G-R-E-E-N St. Patrick’s Day

This song from The Kiboomers is sung to the song (B-I-N-G-O) and comes with an animated video. I like that it includes the words and letters of the song. This way, the kids can follow along with you.

Five Little Shamrocks

The Kiboomers have quite a few St. Patrick’s Day songs for preschoolers, so I can’t help but share more than one. This song is sweet and simple, and it follows the basic “5 little” song countdown.

I was entertained by the facial expressions given to the shamrocks. Something tells me a few children would be entertained, as well.

Rattlin’ Bog

Homer shares their take on an Irish folk song here. The illustrations look like pages from a children’s book, and the song is fun and fast-paced.

You could teach the children the words to the song in a slower way of course. Consider pairing it with a felt board story (or have the kids act things out).

Colors of the Rainbow

Another rainbow song, this time from Jack Hartmann, in case you need more than one option for your kids. As with the other rainbow song, I like how this one touches on all of the colors of the rainbow (without leaving indigo out).

Dance Dance Leprechaun

The Kiboomers share a simple St. Patrick’s Day-themed music and movement song. With this one, you’ll definitely want to get the kids up and participating!

Let’s Play Music has some leprechaun songs you should check out, too.

More St. Patrick’s Day Songs for Preschoolers

The St. Patrick’s Day songs I’ve already shared above are more focused in on preschool children and early learning skills. They’re animated and focus in on the more stereotypical things we associate with St. Patrick’s Day. I think they’re perfect as an addition to your St. Patrick’s Day lesson plans.

But I also want to urge you to share some Irish music with the kids! While these aren’t specifically St. Patrick’s Day songs for preschoolers, they are a great way to share some of the Irish culture with your kids during the holiday.

Mo Ghille Mear (My Gallant Hero)

Oh this song, shared by Choral Scholars of University College Dublin, is just beautiful! It’s in Irish, so the preschoolers can have a listen to how that language sounds when sung.

While the video itself might not capture the kids’ interests, the song is gorgeous. And the video shows kids the bodhrán, an Irish drum.

Traditional Irish Music Session

Travel with Kids TV shares a snippet of some music played in a pub in Ireland.

You can see adult beverages on the tables near the musicians, so you might just share the audio of this video with your kids (as you see fit).

Traditional Irish Tin Whistle

This is a simple video from the Online Academy of Irish Music of an Irish gentleman playing the Irish tin whistle. I think it’s a great way to share some more traditional, real Irish music with the kids.

You could bring in some related instruments after watching or listening to this song. Then let the children explore playing those instruments.

Traditional Irish Dancers

Celtic Video shares this video of some traditional Irish dancing from Tipperary. It’s a nice look at how both women and men participate in the dancing.

After you share this one with the kids, put on some Irish music and encourage the kids to try the dance.

Do you have any particular favorites to add to my list of St. Patrick’s Day songs for preschoolers?
