I love making books with kids, be they class books, emergent readers, or individual kid-directed books. There is just SO MUCH learning that can take place during this process.

Plus, it’s just plain fun. For the kids. And me. Because, let’s be honest, I have just as much fun making these books as the children do!

How Do Printable Books Help Preschoolers?

I mentioned earlier that children can learn A LOT with printable emergent readers or homemade books. In case you were wondering, I wasn’t exaggerating that at all!

In addition to the skills covered in the early readers (like counting, colors, etc.), children also touch on quite a few early literacy concepts. Here is a list of such concepts (and this list is by no means an exhaustive one):

  • Basic book knowledge (front and back of the book)
  • Directionality (we read left to right, top to bottom)
  • Concept of a word
  • Punctuation
  • Sight words
  • Letter-sound correspondence
  • Context cues

How to Fold Printable Books

I’m often asked how to fold many of the emergent readers I share. Here’s a quick video that shows how to fold many of my free printable books:

Of course, if you’d rather just cut the pages in half and then staple them you can!
