Are your preschoolers entertained by scarecrows? If so, these scarecrow activities will definitely be a hit.
I know not every child cares for scarecrows, though. The inclusion of the word “scare” in the name, coupled with how they’re a little scary in some illustrations, makes some children hesitant.
These scarecrow crafts and activities are a good way to help children learn about them in a safe environment. Toss in some books (I’ve shared some ideas at the bottom of the post) and you’ve got lots of ways to help children move past their hesitancy.

I’ve broken down all the scarecrow fun into two simply categories. The first one has the scarecrow art and crafts, with everything else in the second category.

We love this scarecrow art activity because it’s a fun process art activity that you can turn it into a collaborative project. I like to call it our “mixed-up scarecrow art project.”
Make a cardboard scarecrow craft with the children after reading a fall book. You can review shapes along the way, too.
Grab your leftover cardboard tubes to make a toilet paper roll scarecrow. I think the crinkly hair is my favorite part.
The kids can explore making pinwheels as part of a scarecrow paper craft. What a great way to give those fine motor muscles a workout. For younger kids, you can help with the process as they prefer.
Use this shape scarecrow to lead a lesson about shapes with your class. You could use the scarecrow crafts as part of a fall bulletin board once they’re done.
Sticky paper scarecrows have an added benefit of more sensory input as the kids create with different textures.
Your students can practice their scissor skills while making a paper plate scarecrow. If you add a craft stick handle, they’d be great as scarecrow masks for some dramatic play.
These clothespin scarecrows would make great puppets for a kid-designed scarecrow puppet show.
Break out the craft sticks to make popsicle stick scarecrows with the children.
If your students enjoy turning their hands into art, try this hand print scarecrow standing in a corn field.

I couldn’t just stop with scarecrow crafts now, could I? Here are some additional scarecrow activities the kids will love.

Put together a scarecrow sensory bin for the kids. I set this up as a surprise for my students, and it was fun to see them figure out that it was a scarecrow theme.
After the kids have played with the sensory bin to their hearts’ content, use the materials to make a scarecrow sensory bottle!
Your little farmers might get hungry with all the fun scarecrow crafts and such, so why not make a scarecrow snack mix?!
Take the kids outside and teach them how to play scarecrow tag. Perfect for some fall weather fun. Definitely a must-add to your list of scarecrow crafts and activities.
Set up an invitation to build a scarecrow with play dough and loose parts. This would be just right for your sensory center or small groups.
Put together a scarecrow busy box for your students. Busy boxes are great for children who are done with naps early or as part of your calm down center.
Use these scarecrow letter patches to practice letter identification and letter sounds with your students. You can adjust it based on the individual needs of your students.
Teach the kids all about making a scarecrow through a sensory play invitation. The kids can work together to make one. It would be perfect in your dramatic play center or outside on the playground.
Dice games are always a hit in preschool! So they’re sure to enjoy a roll and cover scarecrow alphabet game.
After you and the kids have created some scarecrow crafts, extend the learning by measuring the scarecrows. I like the use of non-traditional measurement tools with the scarecrow math.

Scarecrow Books for Kids
Here are those scarecrow books I promised earlier! One of my favorites to read with the children is The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything. The kids can get involved with actions, as well as guessing the surprise character in the book.
