Winter Calendar Numbers

I love making and using calendar numbers with the preschoolers. They’re a very simple printable, but they really pack a punch.

You can use the number cards in SO many ways, and they’re easily adapted for preschool themes, holidays, and the kids’ interests.

Materials to Use with Winter Number Cards

As I mentioned above, these cards are super simple. So you really don’t need much to get them ready. Here’s what we used:

  • Free printable winter calendar cards (get yours at the bottom of the post)
  • Printer
  • Laminator

The sky’s the limit when it comes to what you pair with the winter calendar numbers. Here are a few suggestions:

You can, of course, use the printable numbers with so many different materials! Let me know in the comments what you’ll use.

How to Prep the Winter Numbers

First things first, grab your own copy of the winter calendar numbers. You can do so at the bottom of this post. Be sure to download them to your computer and open the printable in the most up-to-date version of Adobe Reader.

Then print out the number pages. They’re about 3 inches square, so if you want a smaller set be sure to adjust your printer settings.

After the sheets are printed out, cut each page apart into individual numbers.

Finally, it’s time to laminate the cards. You don’t have to, but doing so will make them a lot more durable (especially around little hands).

Using the Calendar Numbers in Preschool

Once the numbers are ready to go, it’s time to introduce them to your students.

The first suggestion is to use the winter calendar numbers in your . . . well, calendar. I prefer having a pocket chart calendar so the children can easily manipulate the calendar cards. With the calendar, children can practice:

  • Counting
  • Numerical order
  • Patterns (if you combine different versions of the cards)
  • Number identification

But you don’t just have to use the winter numbers as part of your classroom calendar. There are SO MANY other ways to teach and play with them. Try using one of these activities with your students:

Alternating snowman and hot cocoa calendar number cards.

Have the kids place the cards in order. Then challenge them to put the cards in order, backwards. You can work on this during whole group and small groups first. Once the children have the hang of it, add it to center time.

Pair the winter calendar numbers with your favorite manipulatives. The children can work on one-to-one correspondence as they place the appropriate number of manipulatives on each card. Check out more one-to-one correspondence activities for inspiration.

The kids can match the winter calendar numbers with a different set of number cards, like these apple printable numbers, in a simple matching activity.

Use two sets of numbers to play a math game like Memory. You could also use them as part of a number bingo game.

Another idea is to use the numbers as a prompt for sensory writing trays. Add your favorite winter-themed sensory filler to a shallow tray. Then, let the children have at it! Kosher salt is an idea – it’s easy and looks like snow. Or you can make your very own fake snow (learn how to make fake snow with flour)!
