Make a Christmas lights printable book with your students this holiday season. It’s just the thing to add to your list of Christmas activities for preschoolers.

If you’re a regular reader of Fun-A-Day, you know how much I like making books with the kids. These books range from in-depth books that incorporate kids’ art to simple printable readers, like this one.
The children can practice so many early literacy skills as they make their very own books. And, let me tell you, the kids seem to get such a kick out of making their own books!
Christmas Lights Printable Book
In addition to all the fun and learning, I love that this printable can be used in more than one way.
I’m all about getting the most use as possible out of things – and that includes printable books. Read below for some ideas!
Materials Needed for the Holiday Lights Book
Below are the materials we’ve used with the Christmas lights printable book. You can adjust the list based on your own preferences, of course.
- Christmas lights emergent reader (get yours at the bottom of the post)
- Printer
- Stapler
- Scissors or paper cutter
- Binder rings
- Markers
- Play dough
- Pompoms

How to Prep the Christmas Emergent Reader
Print out the version of the reader that you’d prefer. Make enough copies for each child in your class.
To assemble the Christmas lights printable book, fold each page in half with the text facing out. Then arrange the pages and staple along the left-hand side.

You can also just cut the pages apart and staple them that way. I find the print, fold, staple method to be the easiest though.
Once the books are assembled, grab your other materials, and get started with the kids!
Using the Christmas Lights Printable Book with Kids
Introduce the book to your students, explaining that they’ll be making their own book about Christmas lights.
Now is a good time to discuss how they use lights in their holiday celebrations. Do they decorate the outside and inside of their homes with lights? What are some of their favorite lights to put on a Christmas tree?
Then take a quick look through the book together. Point out the sight words and talk to the kids about colors. Ask them to locate the color words, if the children are ready for that.
You can do this by saying, “Let’s find the word ‘red’ together. R-r-r-red. What letter makes the /r/ sound?” From there, help the children locate the appropriate color word. I like having the kids underline the color words with the appropriate color of markers or crayons.

When the color words are all underlined, the children can color the lights with crayons, markers, or even watercolors.
I also really like letting the kids use their fingerprints for things like this, just like we did on the fingerprints Christmas lights photo frame. The children got such a kick out of it. Use washable ink pads and let the children place colorful fingerprints on the Christmas lights printable book.
On the last page, the kids can color (or fingerprint!) a rainbow of lights.

Be sure to keep the books so you and the kids can reread them together throughout the month. If you want to get really fancy, you can even make a Christmas lights pointer to go with the book. Grab a small Christmas light toy and glue it to the end of a craft stick, and there you go.
Other Ideas for the Christmas Lights Printable
As I mentioned earlier, you can use the Christmas lights printable book a few other ways. The black-and-white version is perfect for the book-making I described above.
The color version of the book would be a great way to introduce the book to your students. You can read it during whole group or small group time, before delving into the black-and-white version

You can also use the color version of the Christmas lights printable as fine motor math practice.
Print out the pages and cut them apart into individual half sheets. Laminate the pages or place them in dry erase pockets. You can hole punch the sheets and place them on a binder ring to hang in your math or literacy center.
Pair the pages with a variety of materials. Here are a few suggestions:
- Play dough
- Dry erase markers
- Wikki Stix
- Pompoms
- Christmas lights toys
The kids can use the dry erase markers or Wikki Stix to underline the color words they find.
The play dough, pompoms, and little Christmas lights toys can be used for color matching with the printable lights. You can make things a little more challenging by having the kids use tweezers to place the pompoms onto the lights.
The Christmas printable would be perfect to pair with some Christmas preschool songs. Choose a song with some fun motor movements. Encourage the kids to dance along for a complete and well-rounded lesson.
